I would like to hear from students who have examples of professors who used the classroom to further their own political agenda. Anything from Bush-bashing to Kerry-bashing or preaching radical ideas is encouraged, and, if you have any stories of potential illegal activity, please post them.

For several years I served as editor of The Parthian Standard, a journal dedicated to promoting opposition to the dominant cultural trends at Fordham University. While most faculty were thrilled to finally have an open discussion about various issues, others were not so happy. My untenured, sophomore history professor, who I was required to take, spent an entire class attacking me for being "ignorant" enough to participate in the publication of a "fascist" journal. For an Italian specialist, I was shocked to see her liberal usage of the word fascist. She spent an hour railing against everything we printed, including a piece by a senior memeber of the history department. She did not know this person was a senior professor because she was a newly hired member of the faculty, and had never met him. Nevertheless, she called our articles poorly written, poorly researched, and poorly thought out. She was extremely distraut over our publication of R.V. Young's talk at the Philadelphia Society, "Universities and the Transmission of Culture." I think she may have been so upset because she knew we made our point: faculty members who place their teaching emphasis on a political agenda have no place in the academy.

It is quite a shame that you had to put up with that. I applaud your efforts with the publication. This professor obviously has some issues that she needs to resolve, and, I wouldn't be surprised if she has not thought of moving with the election. I would have been tempted to tell her "It takes one to know one" over her use of fascist. Did you ever talk to your parents/guardians about her attack against you because I am sure if it was me that my folks would not be so happy that their hard-earned money paid some "intellect" to verbally assault me. Best wishes with your studies and keep up the good fight and thank you for your post.
