The Bucknell Conservatives Club, an ISI-affiliated group, participated heavily in the National Right to Life in October.
They held a Cemetery of the Innocent, with graves placed on campus greens representing the destruction of the life of the unborn. The Cemetery idea has been seen on hundreds of campuses across America as a way to educate the university community on the vast number of abortions each year. The Bucknell Conservatives also brought in Pat Toomey for an ISI co-sponsored lecture on the issue of abortion. Toomey lost a close primary race earlier this year for the Senate seat in Pennsylvania that Arlen Specter has held for decades. Specter, a pro-choice, pro-stem cell research Republican, won his 5th consecutive term as Senator in the November 2nd election. I applaud the Bucknell Conservatives for hosting Toomey, a pro-life conservative who consistently fights for the conservative cause. Unfortunately, President Bush, a staunch advocate of pro-life issues, supported Specter in the primary race in order to have a better chance to hold on to the GOP's Senate seat in Pennsylvania. I commend the Bucknell Conservatives Club in their program. It will be interesting to see if Roe v. Wade will be overturned in Pres. Bush's second term. Unfortunately, my campus used to have a pro-life group, but lack of support caused it to cease to exist as an independent group.
