Conservative devotees to the role and revival of art in American society must read Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's 1970 Nobel Lecture. Here the former prisoner and persecuted artist warns the world against a naive hope in "internationalism" to solve the problems of
inter-state and inter-ethnic violence. But hope, he says, is possible with the development of "world literature," which provides the opportunity to study and sympathize with the experiences and values of other cultures, leading to better mutual understanding.
