This Ash Wednesday, parishes in the Church of England are being asked to give up "carbon for Lent", according to a story in the Telegraph:

Bishop James said: "Traditionally people have given up things for Lent. This year we are inviting people to join us in a Carbon Fast. It is the poor who are already suffering the effects of climate change. To carry on regardless of their plight is to fly in the face of Christian teaching.

Of course the list of requirements for the fast are relatively easy:
* giving the dishwasher a day off
* insulating the hot water tank
* avoiding plastic bags

But, where's the sacrifice? I wonder what St. Matthew would have to say about it.
