I would like to get a discussion going on this hot item of the recently discovered manuscript that claims that Judas was asked by Christ to betray Him. Thoughts?

Very interesting as far as historical documents go, but nothing new. Gnostics have been around from the get go, why be bothered about it now?

I'd consider it newsworthy if it makes new claims. We shouldn't dismiss it outright before examination.

Has the Catholic Church made any statements regarding the Gospel of Judas?

While historically significant, to the Christian church the manuscript means little because the Gospel of Judas comes from a Gnostic writer. At the beginning of Christianity there were many sectarian variances about Christ's teaching, which was one of the reasons Paul set out to unify the church. The Gnostics believed that salvation came through a pursuit of knowledge in God, and only upon death would the completion of this search take place. This makes the Gospel of Judas perfect for a Gnostic adaptation, in which Christ compels Judas to help him complete the search for God through crucifixion. The Gnostic books were not put into the Bible for a reason; they do not represent the accepted beliefs of Christianity. This manuscript was written 300 years after the death of Christ, while the earliest biblical Gospels were written a comparatively short 90 years after Christ's death. For me the Gospel of Judas is nothing more than an incredible historic discovery. Please add thought, or correct me if I am wrong in my limited knowledge on this subject.

Joseph has hit the nail on the head. I found this passage on the Internet from St. Irenaeus in his "Against Heresies":
"declare that Cain derived his being from the Power above, and acknowledge that Esau, Korah, the Sodomites, and all such persons, are related to themselves… They declare that Judas the traitor was thoroughly acquainted with these things, and that he alone, knowing the truth as no others did, accomplished the mystery of the betrayal; by him all things, both earthly and heavenly, were thus thrown into confusion. They produce a fictional history of this kind, which they style the Gospel of Judas."
As you can see, the Church Fathers knew of the Gospel of Judas, and they judged that it did not accord with Apostolic Tradition, so it did not enter the canon. Therefore, apart from historical interest, the Gospel of Judas does not affect Christianity at all.
To answer bstein80, I do not think the Catholic Church has made a statement yet although do not take my word for it. I do, however, know that the first one to react was the Russian Orthodox Church, which said the same thing I just did: the document has historical interest, but it does not affect the Christian faith.
Instead of the Gospel of Judas, I think, for my part, that the Gospel of John is more interesting. Smiler
