Position: Humanities Administrator
Institution: National Endowment for the Humanities Location: D.C. Date posted: 8/31/2004 NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES Humanities Administrator GS-1701-13 ($72,108 - $93,742 p.a.) Division of Research Programs Washington, D.C. Vacancy Announcement #04-023C The Division of Research Programs provides national leadership in humanities research through support for research fellowships, collaborative research projects, scholarly editions, and fellowship programs at independent research institutions. The incumbent advises applicants on the division's grant competitions, on the peer review process, and on particular proposals; reviews and analyzes grant applications; selects panelists; attends and chairs peer review panel meetings; assists in formulating recommendations on applications and presents them to the National Council and the Chairman of the Endowment; advises on the provisions of grant awards; monitors active grants; stays abreast of work in the incumbent's field of humanities scholarship and scholarly activity in the humanities in general; initiates and maintains appropriate contact with individuals, and cultural, educational, and other institutions and organizations; performs site visits; provides agency-related presentations at meetings of scholarly societies; and presents workshops at colleges and universities. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate must have: * A Master's degree in a discipline of the humanities (a Ph.D. is preferred) AND * One year of specialized experience in the humanities (The standard for the position is provided below. See the criteria for the ideal candidate.) Specialized experience is professional experience in the humanities in a college or university, or in grant-making or scholarly organizations equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. Typically, experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level would include work in the humanities performed with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment, would be professional work of marked difficulty and responsibility, and would require extended professional training and experience which has demonstrated leadership and attainments of a high order. Candidates who are found to meet the basic qualification requirements will be further evaluated to determine how closely they correspond to the standard set for the ideal candidate. The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria: (1) An advanced degree, preferably a doctorate, in a discipline of the humanities; (2) Demonstrated speaking and writing ability, as evidenced by recent (3-5 years) presentations at professional meetings or similar gatherings and by written reports, articles, and other documents prepared for public occasions; (3) Demonstrated experience in conducting scholarly research in the humanities, as evidenced by recent (3-5 years) publications; (4) Administrative experience preferably in higher education or research institutions or in grant-making or cultural organizations; and (5) Broad knowledge of scholarly issues and trends in the humanities and in higher education and research institutions.
