I have an opportunity to get a 2004 edition for free and wondered what are the differences between it and the new edition.

I'd say that it's worthwhile getting the new edition, since about 1/4 of the schools' profiles (the oldest) were completely revised, and all the key information was carefully updated. If you're considering spending $30-50,000 on a 4 year education, I'd say it's worth your $20 to get the latest information--and to make sure that the professors you're interested in studying with, for instance, are still at the school. We update the book annually because things really do change at colleges, often. Hope that makes sense to you...
