Kudos to George Mason University, which according to The Washington Post has decided not to use $35,000 in university funds as a speaking fee for Michael Moore. See the story here (registration required): http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A63399-2004Sep30?language=printer
After protests by conservative students, who demanded that another speaker be brought to provide balance, along with Republican legislators, administrators chose to rescind the invitation to Moore, who's traveling the country to promote the DVD sales of "Fahrenheit 9/11." Moore claims he'll show up anyway and speak, without a fee. That's just fine--free speech is important on campus. What's more, the film he made raises a few valuable questions, amidst its distortions, childish conspiracy theories, and manipulative use of bereaved military families. But students are rightly sick of seeing particular viewpoints--always, somehow, within the same narrow range--receive the imprimatur of approval by their schools, while conservative speakers come rarely, must be privately funded, and are often shouted down by hostile activists. The political imbalance reflected in university speakers programs is one of the key reasons conservatives feel embattled on most campuses. It's good to see that one school at least recognizes this fact. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Big Brother, |
