Oh I would also like to point out that Shimer was on a list of colleges that suited conservatives, old fashioned liberals, and people of faith the best.

ToryH,
Thank you for your response. There IS a war going on in America. It is a war of ideology whose battlefields include politics, culture and yes, education. The victor of this war will affect everyone else with their ideas. The liberal/conservative dichotomy is very real. The exceptions you listed at Shimer are just that - exceptions. People in college are usually in a transitory state when it comes to their worldview, and therefore, ideology. A person's worldview and ideology usually solidify from raw experience much later in life. By percentage of population, the vast majority falls quite neatly into either liberal or conservative categories - even if the individual isn't personally aware of their classification. It appeared to me that JosephC was asking from the viewpoint of someone who has taken sides and wanted to know how best to proceed. I don't apologize for using a military analogy. If he wants to participate in the "war of ideas" raging in this country, he needs to be properly prepared to state his views as succinctly, eloquently and persuasively as possible. As far as Shimer being on a list of colleges that suited conservatives, old fashioned liberals, and people of faith the best, there were a lot of schools on that list with which I had problems. Please read my review of All-American Colleges here (You'll have to scroll down to find it.) This message has been edited. Last edited by: INsage, |

I'm really not replying to Lady Beatrix and her search for schools-- after all, her post was in 2006. Hopefully she has found her way. However, does anyone have comment on the following schools and how strong or weak their core curricula are? I have a copy of the ISI Guide, but these schools are not included:
U. of Oregon Lehigh University Catholic U U. of Michigan U. of Illinois U of Southern California California Polytechnic San Luis Obispo Washington University, St. Louis Miami University, Ohio Thank you for any info you have to offer! |
